Karl Arndt (art historian)

Karl Arndt (born August 22, 1929 in Hanover ; † September 10, 2018 in Emden ) was a German art historian and professor of art history at the University of Göttingen .

Life

Arndt was born in 1929 as the eldest son of a bank employee. He studied art history, German and history in Göttingen . In 1956 Arndt received his doctorate with Dürer's Apocalypse : Attempts at Interpretation in Göttingen. In 1969 he completed his habilitation with studies on the landscape drawings by Pieter Bruegel the Elder. Ä. with Heinz Rudolf Rosemann and became his successor. Arndt was a professor at the University of Göttingen between 1970 and his retirement in 1994. In 1978 he became a full member of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen . He was the author of numerous art history publications.
