Karl Ludwig Ferdinand Arnold (born October 2, 1818 in Berlin , † March 4, 1882 in Ballenstedt ) was a Prussian major general .

Life

Karl was a son of the Prussian lieutenant colonel and knight of the Iron Cross August Arnold (1784-1837) and his wife Emilie Ferdinande, née Biener (1793-1827).

Military career

Arnold visited the cadet houses in Potsdam and Berlin . He was then aggregated on August 5, 1837 as Second Lieutenant of the 6th Artillery Brigade of the Prussian Army . For further training, he graduated from the United Artillery and Engineering School from October 1838 to September 1839 and was classified as an artillery officer on December 30, 1840 with a patent from October 10, 1837. After being assigned to the Central Gymnastics Institute, Arnold was promoted to Prime Lieutenant at the end of October 1850 . Promoted to captain on March 14, 1854, he was appointed director of the artillery depot in Breslau . In 1855 he was released from this position and on May 1, 1858, he was transferred from the square to Wittenberg as an artillery officer. This was followed from June 29, 1859 to July 6, 1864 as a battery chief in the 5th Artillery Regiment . Then Arnold was transferred back to the 6th Artillery Brigade as a major in the same capacity . On September 23, 1865 he took over the riding department and on March 22, 1866 rose to lieutenant colonel.

During the war against Austria Arnold took part in the Battle of Königgrätz in 1866 and received the Order of the Red Eagle, IV class with swords. After the war he was appointed commander of Field Artillery Regiment No. 6 on March 3, 1870 and promoted to colonel on July 26, 1870 . In this capacity he led his regiment in the war against France in 1870/71 in the sieges of Paris and Toul , the bombardment of Pfalzburg and in the battles at Chevilly , Villejuif, Thiais and Choisy le Roi .

Awarded the Iron Cross II. Class, Arnold was initially commissioned with the command of the 4th Field Artillery Brigade after the conclusion of peace under position à la suite of his regiment on May 29, 1873 . On April 30, 1874 he was appointed commander of this brigade and on October 27, 1874 he was promoted to major general. He received on 13 September 1876 Red Eagle II. Arnold married Anna Hohoff (1828–1861), a daughter of Colonel Louis Ferdinand Hohoff, on May 4, 1857 in Charlottenburg. After her death, he married Olga Hohoff, the sister of his first wife, in Breslau on August 4, 1862. The couple had three sons:
