Karl Dammann (veterinarian)

Karl Dammann (born October 22, 1839 in Greifswald , † June 1, 1914 in Baden-Baden ; full name: Karl Johann Christian Dammann ) was a German veterinarian , university professor and specialist author. He was the father of the sculptor Hans Dammann .

Life

Karl Dammann studied veterinary medicine in Berlin, obtained his veterinary license in 1861 , became district veterinarian in Cottbus in 1863 and professor at the Agricultural Academy in Proskau in 1865 . After Moritz Fürstenberg's death , Dammann was appointed to the Royal State and Agricultural Academy Eldena in 1873 and, after its dissolution, to the University of Veterinary Medicine in Hanover in 1877 . In 1881 he was appointed director of the university and soon afterwards to the medical council.

From 1874 to 1881 he was President of the German Veterinary Council . In addition to numerous treatises in specialist journals, he wrote the work The health care of agricultural domestic mammals (Berlin 1883–1886).

From 1877 to 1879 he was a member of the National Liberal Party in the Prussian House of Representatives . There he represented the constituency of Stralsund 2 (Grimmen - Greifswald) as a member of parliament . In 1909 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .

His grave is in the Engesohde city cemetery in Hanover . It is adorned with the sculpture of a grieving pilgrim by the hand of his son.
