from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Karl Gatermann the Younger (born June 17, 1909 in Dessau , † April 3, 1992 in Munich ) was a German painter , graphic artist and set designer . He was the nephew of the painter of the same name Karl Gatermann d. Ä. , Brother of Bruno Gatermann and uncle of his son Uwe Gatermann .

Life

Karl Gatermann trained as a decorative painter in the company of his father Johannes Gatermann in Zerbst / Anhalt . In 1928 he passed the journeyman's examination there and in 1933 the master’s examination. His artistic training began in 1926 at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Dessau with Wilhelm Danz and from 1927 at the Bauhaus Dessau with Walter Gropius , Wassily Kandinsky , Paul Klee and Lyonel Feininger . The financing of his studies made the occasional activity as a specialist teacher in the painting class of the vocational school in Zerbst necessary. From 1935 until the outbreak of World War II , he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich . His teachers there were Angelo Jank , Max Doerner , Adolf Schinnerer and Max Mayrshofer , stage design with Emil Preetorius .

He worked as a stage designer at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich as well as at the opera houses in Magdeburg and Bernburg (Saale) ; also at Bavaria Filmkunst in Munich - Geiselgasteig , for example in the feature film Philine by and with Theo Lingen . This film was a so-called defector that was premiered in 1949.

After the war, he mainly painted naturalistic oil paintings from the Munich area and the surrounding mountains. The Munich art publisher Emil Köhn acquired numerous pictures with mountain motifs for printing art postcards. Gatermann discovered the changing moods in the parks for his work very early on and described himself as the “first painter of Munich's park landscapes ”. His style of painting approached late impressionism during this time .

Signatures

With the otherwise identical signature K. Gatermann signed Karl Gatermann d. Ä. , so the uncle, only his early pictures occasionally with the addition of Munich . These few pictures were taken while he was studying there before the First World War. From 1919 he no longer gave this location, as he had returned to Lübeck.

The nephew, on the other hand, i.e. Karl Gatermann d. J. , mostly added Munich to his work , as he lived and worked there. Further clear distinguishing features can be found in the motifs and painting styles . Also of great importance is the fact that Karl Gatermann d. J. signed his pictures very often in block letters after the Second World War, from around 1950 onwards , which his uncle never did.
