Carl Gesterding

Carl Gesterding (born February 4, 1774 in Greifswald ; † October 31, 1843 there ) was a German lawyer, historian and mayor of Greifswald. He is considered to be the founder of Greifswald city ​​history research .

Life

The son of Christoph Gottfried Nicolaus Gesterding and Wilhelmine Breitsprecher attended the Greifswald city school and then the University of Greifswald .

In 1798 he was elected to the city council. From 1808 he was the city's second lawyer , and from 1821 as the successor to Johann Christian Billroth, who had been appointed mayor, first lawyer. During this period he experienced the French era and the transition from Swedish Pomerania to Prussia . In 1824 he was a member of the city of Greifswald on the provincial parliament of the province of Pomerania . From 1833 until the end of his life he was mayor of Greifswald. He achieved particular merits through the reorganization of the city administration. He was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, IV class .

In addition to his professional activity, Carl Gesterding devoted himself to the history of Pomerania , especially Greifswald. So he put together a six-volume collection of city documents. His contributions to the history of the city of Greifswald formed the basis of urban historical research in the 19th century. As a result of his legal work for various knightly families in Western Pomerania , he wrote genealogical works.

Carl Gesterding was married to Caroline von Vahl (1785-1838), a daughter of the Greifswald Kommerzienrat Balzer Peter von Vahl (1755-1825). The marriage remained childless. He was buried in his wife's family grave in the Old Cemetery .

Franz Gesterding (1781–1841), lawyer and university professor, was his brother.

A commemorative plaque was attached to Carl Gesterding's house (today Steinbeckerstraße 35) after 1877; It was removed by strangers in the early 2000s. Since the late 1930s, a street in the Nördliche Mühlenvorstadt has been called Gesterdingstrasse after him .
