Karl Ludwig Gervien (born May 13, 1799 in Landsberg ; † April 24, 1858 in Münster ) was a Prussian major general .

Life

Origin and family

Karl Ludwig was the son of the auditor of the same name at the Excise Office in Landsberg and Anna Dorothea, née von Reinbrecht. He married Marie Anna Dorothea von Leithold (1805-1893) in Berlin in 1828 . The marriage resulted in two daughters.

Career

Gervien began his career as Ulan in Guard Lancers of the Prussian army . In 1816 he was promoted to porter ensign and in 1818 to secondary lieutenant in the 22nd Infantry Regiment . From 1820 to 1823 he was commanded to train at the General War School and from 1823 to 1826 teacher at the divisional school of the 12th Division , and from 1826 teacher at the Kadettenanstalt Berlin . Here he rose to prime lieutenant in 1829 and was released from his command of the Cadet Corps in 1833 . He was promoted to captain and company commander in the 22nd Infantry Regiment in 1835 and to major in 1845. In the same year he was assigned to the Great General Staff and in 1849 was promoted to head of department. In 1850 he also became a member of the directorate of studies of the General War School, rose to lieutenant colonel in 1851 and to colonel in 1852 .

In terms of awards, Gervien was awarded the Order of the Iron Crown II class in 1853 and the Order of St. Vladimir III in 1856 . Class received.

He was also sent to Magdeburg in 1856 to represent the commander of the 14th Infantry Brigade on leave , but in the same year he took over the command of the 26th Infantry Brigade . In 1857 he was placed à la suite of the general staff and finally promoted to major general.
