Karl Mayr (born November 8, 1936 in Schärding ; † February 12, 2020 in Ried im Innkreis ) was an Austrian entrepreneur and founder of Fussl Modestrasse .

Life

Karl Mayr was the eldest son of the teacher Karl Mayr and the merchant's daughter Maria Mayr, née Fußl. After primary school in Ort im Innkreis and Aurolzmünster , he attended grammar school in Ried im Innkreis for four years . He should become a teacher like the father. With the change to the commercial school in Braunau am Inn , however, the course was set for a commercial career, with the aim of taking over the family's general store. Grandfather Karl Fußl had died in 1951 and his uncle Karl Fußl, who was planned to be his successor, had not returned home from the war.

After two years of commercial school and several internships, among others at the textile wholesaler Sinzinger in Ried im Innkreis and in the Bachmaier department store in Taufkirchen an der Pram , he joined the small rural grocery shop in 1954. At that time the business was run by the mother, the owner was the grandmother Maria Fußl. Almost 18 years old, however, he soon determined the direction, and did not officially take over until 1963. He continuously expanded the range and gradually expanded the Kramerladen, founded in 1871, into the most modern self-service shopping center in the region. Since 1967 he has been actively supported by his wife Berta, a merchant's daughter from Königsbrunn am Wagram in Lower Austria , who joined the newly founded civil law company (GbR) with 50 percent. With the abandonment of groceries and thus half of the turnover, in 1975 the final concentration on textiles took place.

The next step was in 1981 the start of the branch with the first house in Ried im Innkreis . Other locations were quickly added: In Upper Austria Mattighofen (such as Ried owned by the company), Grieskirchen , Braunau , Wels , Schärding , Vöcklabruck , Bad Ischl etc. and in the state of Salzburg St. Johann im Pongau and Bischofshofen . The expansion was supported by the company's own shop fitting.

Logo FUSSL Modestrasse

The brand was developed in parallel. The original spelling of the name Fußl was changed to Fussl for reasons of advertising graphics. The first logo was created in the 1980s: FUSSL in white capital letters in a red oval. In 1989 this logo was underlaid with a blue “Modestraße” sign: the concise “ FUSSL Modestraße ” logo was born.

Karl Mayr, a “businessman with body and soul”, as well-meaning companions soon called him, was a pioneer in the introduction of self-service and the massive use of advertising. In his active time, a major concern of his was the fight against the excessive bureaucracy, for him an obstacle to economic development in the country. At the forefront, he campaigned for the shops to open on December 8th to prevent the outflow of purchasing power to Bavaria , where shops were open that day.

In 1996 Karl and Berta Mayr handed over the company with 17 stores to their sons Karl and Ernst, who continued the expansion. The FUSSL Fashion Street has (as of February 2019) more than 160 stores in every province of Austria and Bavaria , employs approximately 1,200 people and recorded sales in 2018 about 150 million euros.
