Karl Ott (pedagogue)
Karl Vincenz Ott (born January 3, 1873 in Mainwangen ; † November 5, 1952 in Karlsruhe ) was a German educator and politician .
Life
Karl Ott was born as the son of the main teacher Joseph Egon Ott (1830–1890) and his wife Lequendia Ott, née Glöckler (1845–1929). His sister Anna (1874–1953) was born a year and a half after Karl.
After attending grammar school and high school in Konstanz , he studied history, German, French and English at the universities in Heidelberg and Leipzig . He received his doctorate as Dr. phil. At the same time he completed courses at Oxford University and the Sorbonne .
In 1896 Ott worked as a private tutor for an English noble family.
After returning to Germany and doing a short internship in Kehl , Ott received his first apprenticeship at the girls' high school in Karlsruhe . From 1911 he was head of the Realschule in Schopfheim , became head of the Humboldt School in Karlsruhe in 1913 and took over as director of the Goethe-Gymnasium there in 1919 . In 1927 Ott became an honorary professor at the TH Karlsruhe , and from 1928 he was also head of the newly founded Pedagogical Seminar in Karlsruhe . After the National Socialists came to power , Ott was dismissed from school in 1934 and retired early .
After the Second World War , Ott took part in the rebuilding of a democratic administration in Baden . In 1945/46 he was the state administrator for education and culture in the directorate of the state of Baden . After being appointed ministerial director in 1947, he acted as an advisor to the Schloss Salem school and later resigned from the civil service; Leo Wohleb was his successor as State Secretary for Culture and Education.
Ott, who was never married, spent his retirement in Karlsruhe. There he lived with his sister Anna, who was responsible for housekeeping.
Karl Ott died of a stroke on November 5, 1952 . His grave is now in the Mainwanger cemetery. He is buried there, together with his sister, who only survived her brother for barely a year, in a family grave with a small chapel. The inscription on the grave slab reads:

Honors
- 1927: Honorary professor at the Technical University of Karlsruhe
- 1951: Large Federal Cross of Merit for his commitment and his achievements in the field of education
- In Mainwangen, the thoroughfare from Mühlingen to Holzach is named " Doktor-Karl-Ott-Straße " in honor of Ott .
