From 1992 to 2013 he was regional chairman of the Freedom Party of Austria in Salzburg and from April 2005 to June 2013 Deputy Federal Chairman. Schnell fell out with party leader Heinz-Christian Strache as the chairman of the FPÖ Salzburg regional club . In June 2015 he was expelled from the FPÖ and founded a split, the Free Party of Salzburg .

biography

Karl Schnell graduated in 1973 at Bundesrealgymnasium Zell am See and received his doctorate in 1980 at the University of Vienna to Dr. med. From 1985 to 1992 Schnell owned a doctor's practice in Hinterglemm .

Schnell was appointed General Secretary of the FPÖ in 1991. In 1992 he was elected regional party leader of the FPÖ Salzburg . From 21 October 1992, he was a member of the Salzburg provincial government Katschthaler I , Katschthaler II and Schausberger I .

In 1997, the FPÖ Salzburg obtained confidential data from a computer belonging to the then head of the SPÖ, Gerhard Buchleitner . Quickly made this data public as a "post chess list" and was elected from the state government through a motion of no confidence by the ÖVP and SPÖ. In 1998 he was dismissed along with the rest of the leadership of the Salzburg state party because of criticism of federal party leader Jörg Haider , whom he accused of not having given him enough support in the "data theft affair". The Salzburg FPÖ was then directed directly from the federal party headquarters. After apologizing to Haider, Schnell was able to resume his work as state party chairman.

Schnell also caused a stir in the context of the hump-dump affair triggered by Hilmar Kabas in May 2000 , when he said at a party event in November 2000, referring to a statement by Kabas about the then Federal President Thomas Klestil : “ Lump is actually a harmless one Expression. We all know this expression. I call Lumpi my dog - that's a netta, liaba Falott. “In July 2001 he was sentenced to a fine of 100,000 Austrian Schillings (around 7200 euros) by the Vienna Regional Court (after his immunity as a member of the state parliament was lifted). The Vienna Higher Regional Court upheld the judgment in December 2001.

After the BZÖ split off from the FPÖ in 2005, Karl Schnell stayed with his regional group in the FPÖ.

On June 21, 2008 Schnell appeared on behalf of Heinz-Christian Strache at a congress of the Republicans party . It was quickly stated there that the so-called right-wing parties of the center such as CDU, CSU and ÖVP were to blame for the black African in lederhosen to serve as a waiter in Munich , and he also stated that the FPÖ was a right-wing party that stopped democratic soil.

In November 2013, Schnell was replaced by Rupert Doppler as regional party leader. On June 10, 2015, FPÖ federal party leader Heinz-Christian Strache announced that Schnell had been expelled from the FPÖ on June 9. Together with Schnell, his successor Rupert Doppler was also excluded. Andreas Schöppl became his successor at the Salzburg FPÖ leadership . The Free Party of Salzburg then quickly founded .

In 2014 he was awarded the Great Medal of Honor of the State of Salzburg . After the state elections in Salzburg in 2018 , he left the state parliament.
