Karl Schwien was born in 1894 in the early days of the German Empire . After graduating from school, he studied at the road research center under Curt Risch in Hanover at the Technical University there , where he did his dissertation in 1932 under the title On the Propagation of Vibrations .

Also in Hanover, Schwien was appointed head of the water and bridge department of the municipal civil engineering office.

After the seizure of power by the National Socialists in 1933 and the plan for the construction of the Maschsee, which was then redrafted by city building officer Karl Elkart and the securing of financing by Mayor Arthur Quantity , a rapid expansion took place with initially 100, later with up to 1650 unemployed under the direction of Schwien of the Maschsee. To employ as many unemployed people as possible, Schwien only used machines such as excavators or conveyor belts where it was unavoidable.

Also in the 1930s, Karl Schwien built the "Ihmebrücken I and II" over the Ihme , the Legion Bridge, later named between the Calenberger Neustadt and the Hanoverian district Linden-Süd , and the stadium bridge .

Honors

The Schwienbrücke over the Leine in the southern part of Hanover , built in 1963, was posthumously named after the senior building councilor Schwien who was involved in the planning and construction of the Maschsee.
