Carl Christoph von Martens (also Karl von Martens ; born June 12, 1790 on Gut Miravecchia near Dolo (Veneto) ; † December 25, 1861 in Stuttgart ) was a Württemberg general and military writer .
Life
Martens was born the son of Wilhelm Conrad von Martens (1748–1828), the royal Danish consul general in Venice , and his wife Margarete von Scheler (1765–1832). In 1808 he came to Württemberg to live with his uncle Georg Freiherr von Scheler . He became a cadet in the Württemberg Guard and in 1809 a lieutenant in the Fifth Coalition War . In the Russian campaign in 1812 he made a name for himself in the battle of Borodino . In the Wars of Liberation he was promoted to first lieutenant in 1813 and shortly afterwards to staff captain . In 1814 he joined the General Staff . During this time he began his writing activity. From 1825 he worked at the officers training institute in Ludwigsburg .
Martens was promoted to major in 1829 and at the same time to adjutant to the Württemberg Minister of War. In this position he was appointed lieutenant colonel in 1834 . In 1837 he was given command of the Landjäger Corps and in 1840 he was promoted to colonel and finally in 1849 to major general . He is said to have made a name for himself in the turmoil of 1848/1849. In 1856 he was retired and in 1859 he was appointed again for four weeks as Deputy Minister of War Moriz von Miller in the Sardinian War .
The siblings were the botanist Georg von Martens , who later became Colonel Christian von Martens, and the painter and sculptor Friedrich von Martens (1807–1885). The painter Luise von Martens was a niece and the zoologist and explorer Eduard von Martens was a nephew.
