The Karlsfelder See is a 24  hectare (ha) large quarry pond near Karlsfeld , Dachau district , Upper Bavaria .

geography

The groundwater lake near Karlsfeld is located about 13 km northwest of the city center of Munich and 3 km southwest of Dachau at an altitude of 482  m above sea level. NN in the middle of the Dachauer Moos . In north-south direction, the lake extends over a length of 940 meters, the width is between 150 and 320 meters. It is 10 meters deep in the south and only 6 meters in the north. At its north end it has two overflows. The Moosgraben , which drains over the Kaltenbach to the Amper , and the Tiefengraben, which flows over the Dachau-Schleissheim Canal to the Würm . The bed is in means (MQ) is about 260 liters per second. As a result, the lake water is renewed within a month. Immediately to the north-west of the bathing lake there is a wet biotope and another small quarry pond, the so-called Schallweiher, as well as an overburden dump, which is 505  m above sea level. NN rises and serves as a lookout point.

history

The Karlsfelder See emerged from 1939 when large quantities of gravel were required for the building goods station in Munich-Ludwigsfeld of the Deutsche Reichsbahn . In the course of 1942, these construction activities came to a standstill due to the war and the pit, which had only been half-dredged, gradually filled with groundwater and precipitation. In addition, several bombs fell in the area during the air raids on Munich , which were aimed at the nearby BMW engine plant in Allach and the marshalling yard. Only the strong groundwater intrusion prevented on the grounds during the last years of the war the flak for the protection of the near important war BMW engine works, Flugwerft Oberschleißheim and forced labor satellite camp stationed in Allach. They therefore moved into positions that were less watery about two kilometers to the east and south. The excavation pit and spoil heaps were initially left to their own devices, later partly used as a garbage dump and, after the end of World War II, by the US Army as a training area for floating tanks . In 1968 the site was returned to the Federal Republic of Germany and initially lay fallow until the 1980s. In the years from 1971 to 1977 it was gradually transformed into a bathing lake by the Association for the Safeguarding of Supra-Local Recreational Areas, and further leisure and recreational opportunities were created in the area.

Todays use

Around the lake, the shore of which is accessible for around 3 km, there are around 17 hectares of sunbathing lawns with trees, almost 5 km of walking and cycling paths, restaurants , beer gardens , beach volleyball fields, table tennis tables , children's playgrounds and barbecue facilities . The Karlsfeld indoor swimming pool and the grounds of the sports club TSV Eintracht Karlsfeld eV with a stadium, clubhouse, sports hall and several tennis courts are also nearby .

The microbiological monitoring of the lake is carried out by the Dachau health department. The data are collected about fortnightly during the bathing season. During the bathing season, up to 20,000 people looking for relaxation visit the lake every day. Driving on motor boats, staying overnight, camping and taking animals with you is forbidden because of the unresolved faecal problems associated with it; failure to comply may result in fines. With a few exceptions, the water quality is mostly close to that of drinking water. The scuba diving is only the police and fire permits regularly for training purposes, the population is there on the snorkeling limit.

Unfortunately, the high frequency of the bathing lake also results in deaths among bathers, who expect too much sport, although the water rescue service operates a seasonally operated rescue station on the east bank. Occasionally published naturist opportunities have also already led to moral distortions between individual local user groups.

Trivia

In 1967 a man from Dachau had bought a crocodile in Munich and took it to the Karlsfelder See in the back seat of his car. When he got out to put on his swimming trunks, the crocodile fled into the lake and went underground. The animal has never been seen since.
