The aim of the recreational area association is to create and design regional recreational areas in the area of ​​its members, which are made available to the general public free of charge. The association also sets up signposted cycling and hiking trails that connect these recreational areas with one another and with neighboring residential areas.

The association primarily takes on the acquisition of the land and securing the financing. The overall planning of the projects is usually carried out by the planning association for the outer economic area of ​​Munich . The detailed planning is then carried out by independent landscape architects, the structural and civil engineering measures that arise are planned by independent architects and engineers. The ongoing maintenance is carried out by the respective district or the respective municipality. The recreation area association only becomes active again when a general renovation is required.

Finances

The association's annual budget in 2018 was around 1.9 million euros. According to the statutes, no fees are charged from the users of the recreational areas, the budget is provided by contributions from the member bodies, which are calculated from the number of residents. This resulted in z. B. 2009 a financing share of the state capital Munich of around 49 percent. Since it was founded, the association has earned around EUR 82.4 million, of which an amount of around EUR 7.2 million has not been used for the direct purpose of the association, i.e. the acquisition of land, the expansion of recreational areas and the cycle path network (as of the end of 2018 ).

Projects

In order to disentangle the leisure traffic, which used to lead mainly to the south of Munich, the association has created new local recreation areas, especially in the north, east and west of Munich. One focus was on the quarry ponds created by the gravel mining in the Munich gravel plain . However, sections of the bank on the lakes in the south of Munich were also secured for the general public.

By 2011, the recreational area association had funded a total of 34 recreational areas, including 21 on quarry ponds and 8 on natural bodies of water. Around 33 km of lakeshore were expanded, around 1.5 million m² of lawns were laid out and over 1,000 km of signposted cycling and hiking trails were set up. About a third of the association's 6.3 million m² property is water.
