The Karl Route is an international long-distance cycle which over the Westerzgebirgskamm and taking both the towns Aue and Carlsbad as the dump cycle path in Saxony with the Egerradweg in Bohemia combines.

description

Blauenthal, separation of the Mulderadweg and Karlsroute

The Karlsroute mostly runs on little-traveled public roads and hiking trails, but to a small extent also on artificially created bike paths. The routes are not paved throughout. The difficulty of the routes ranges from easy to difficult. The length of the main route is around 60 km, plus four secondary routes with a further 100 km in length. On the German side, the route between Aue and Blauenthal follows the former route of the Chemnitz – Adorf railway line . The cycle route runs in the valley of the Große Bockau between Blauenthal and the Czech border near Oberwildenthal . On the Czech side, the long -distance cycle path runs largely parallel to the Karlovy Vary – Johanngeorgenstadt railway in the Rolava valley .

history

The cycle path was created in 2012 in cooperation with the city of Eibenstock , the Muldental cycle path association ( Aue , Bad Schlema , Bockau , Eibenstock, Lauter-Bernsbach , Schönheide , Zschorlau ), the Bystřice municipal association ( Abertamy , Horní Blatná , Pernink , Potůčky ) and the Nové municipality Hamry as part of the "Objective 3 program to promote cross-border cooperation 2007-2013 between the Free State of Saxony and the Czech Republic" with a financial framework of approx. 2.2 million euros. It received 85% funding from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and was inaugurated on May 9, 2015.

The project partners are currently working on an extension of the Karlsroute to Chemnitz . The main route from Aue via Hartenstein and Oelsnitz / Erzgeb. to Chemnitz to be extended by approx. 50 km, so that the total length of the “Karlsroute” increases to approx. 110 km. Existing cycle routes or those listed in the SachsenNetz Rad (Sächsische Radverkehrskonzeption, 2014) should be taken into account in the routing. In addition, the following 4 secondary routes are to be identified in order to achieve even broader cycling tourism in the border area:

  • "Talsperrenrunde Eibenstock" (approx. 35 km), (DE / Eibenstock – Schönheide – Stützengrün – Eibenstock)
  • "Porcelain route" (approx. 45 km), (CZ / Nová Role – Chodov – Loket – Karlovy Vary – Nová Role)
  • "Iron route" (approx. 6 km), (CZ / Pernink – Horní Blatná)
  • "Wistritz route" (approx. 29 km), (CZ / Abertamy – Lípa – Merklín – Hroznětín – Děpoltvice – Nová Role)

Some of the route sections are already passable today. Project completion and signage should be completed in 2020.

Public transportation

On the Czech side, the long -distance cycle route runs largely parallel to the Karlovy Vary – Johanngeorgenstadt railway line , which is part of the EgroNet network. The EgroNet ticket exists for this , a special local transport ticket which includes taking a bicycle with you and which is recognized on almost all rail and bus routes in the region.
