In 1883 the Swede Carl August Carlson came to the area and started a farm. In 1904, the SOO Line Railroad built a railroad that ran across Carlson's Land. The railroad company also bought a piece of land from Carlson to build a railroad settlement. In order to give the settlement a name, a number of other suggestions were made for the name Karlstad , which both the farmer Carlson and the Swedish city of Karlstad were the inspiration for.
