Karmi'el ( Hebrew כַּרְמִיאֵל, Arabic كارميل) is a city in Galilee in the northern district of Israel , about 20 kilometers east of Akko .

Since it was founded in 1964, Karmi'el has grown to 46,124 inhabitants (2018), to which the status of a developing city also contributed; future plans assume up to 120,000 inhabitants. This development is favored by the new construction of the railway line of the Israeli railway to Akko.

Karmiel was officially founded on October 19, 1964 as part of the "Settlement and Development Plan for Galilee ". Karmiel has been a city since 1985.

location

The city is located in northern Israel, about halfway between Akko and Safed in the so-called "Beit Ha-Kerem Valley" ( Hebrew בקעת בית הכרם). To the north of the city extend the mountain hills of the Upper Galilee , while to the south the mountain hills of the Lower Galilee extend. The name Karmiel comes from "Kerem" (vineyard, olive field), and is based on the innumerable olive tree fields that are in this area. The city is about 250 m above sea level.

Karmiel is an example of future-oriented urban planning. The city was planned from the beginning for 120,000 inhabitants, and the various districts were gradually built according to the future construction plan. Today there are around 50,000 inhabitants in Karmiel, compared to 22,000 in 1989. If everything goes according to plan, the city should accommodate 120,000 residents in 2020.

The planned railway line to Akko and thus the connection to the Akko-Haifa-Tel Aviv rail link is intended to ensure this development.

Industry

The 24 square kilometer industrial area, separated from the city, is home to textile and construction industries, plastics, wood, iron and steel processing, as well as hi-tech companies that have settled here and both the Jewish and Arab residents Providing work to neighbors. The approximately 80 companies and workshops employ around 8,000 people.

In 1973 Baruch Wenger (* 1930; † 1988) was elected first chairman of the municipality of Karmiels and in 1985, after Karmiel was declared a city, also its first mayor. Baruch Wenger held this office until his death in 1988. Since 1988, Adi Eldar has been in charge of the city as his successor.
