Carnival in the Ruhr area
Carnival in the Ruhr area goes back to the Middle Ages, so the archives of the city of Duisburg contain the first city bill ever written in German from the year 1377 , from which it emerges that the councilors and the citizens extensively celebrated fast evening ("Vastavent"). Carnival is celebrated in both the Rhenish and Westphalian parts of the Ruhr area .
History of the carnival in the Ruhr area
The first carnival societies were founded in Duisburg in the second half of the 19th century. Carnival societies in other cities in the Ruhr area were founded in Bottrop and Hagen in 1881 , in Dortmund in 1888 and in Bochum and in 1906 in Oberhausen . The first attempt to establish a Rose Monday procession in Duisburg goes back to 1928. Duisburg is the seat of the Lower Rhine Regional Association in the Bund Deutscher Karneval e. V. The area of the association includes the cities of Essen, Oberhausen, Ratingen, the parts of the Wesel and Kleve and Duisburg districts on the right bank of the Rhine. In the Bund-Ruhr-Karneval e. V., based in Dortmund, is the organization for the carnival clubs of the Westphalian Ruhr area and the city of Mülheim an der Ruhr.
Carnival Museum
In 1973, the decision was made in Duisburg to set up a museum to document the history of the carnival in Duisburg and on the Lower Rhine . Based on research in the city archive, a collection was created that included medals and photos and that found a permanent place in a Duisburg school in 1985. In 1998 the company moved to a larger school in the north of the city. The 1st Lower Rhine Carnival Museum is looked after on a voluntary basis and is managed by the Main Committee of Duisburger Carneval 1956 e. V. worn.
Street carnival in the Ruhr area
Numerous parades and street festivals take place between Weiberfastnacht and Shrove Tuesday in the Ruhr area, including the smallest "parade" in the republic. It was carried out by a single person, Helmut Scherer , in Unna , North Rhine-Westphalia . The move consists of a single hand-drawn cart and has been growing in popularity since 1956 . However, Scherer himself retired in 2011 as an active carnivalist .
