Catherine of Saxony (1468–1524)
Catherine of Saxony (born July 24, 1468 in Grimma , Saxony , † February 10, 1524 in Calenberg ) was the second wife of Siegmund , Archduke of Austria and Regent of Tyrol .
Life
Katharina was the eldest child of Duke Albrecht the Brave of Saxony and his wife Sidonie of Bohemia . At the age of 16, she became the second wife of Archduke Siegmund in Innsbruck in 1484 , who was already 56 years old and was considered senile. The marriage remained childless. Katharina could hardly exert any political influence in Tyrol. A former lover of Siegmund intrigues against the young bride and falsely claimed in 1487 that Katharina wanted to poison her husband. Since the Archduke's political style was no longer tenable, he was largely disempowered by the Tyrolean estates in 1487, which was then led by Emperor Friedrich III. were supported. Therefore, constant quarrels ensued because of the new court rules that had now been introduced, which brought restrictions for the Archduke with it. Finally Siegmund abdicated in 1490 and Katharina now had a significantly smaller budget than before. Siegmund died in 1496 and Katharina married Duke Erich von Braunschweig for a second time (around 1496/97) , but only one daughter, Anna Maria, emerged from this marriage. After her death (1524) Katharina was buried in Münden ; its epitaph is from Loy Hering .
