Venäläinen, who starts for the Noormarkun Nopsa, made her debut in Lahti in March 1994 in the cross-country skiing world cup and achieved tenth place in the relay. In December 1994 she ran in Ilomantsi for the first time in the Continental Cup and took 24th place over 5 km classic. In the following month she completed her first race in the World Cup individual in Lahti, which she finished classically in 39th place over 10 km. At the Nordic Junior World Ski Championships in 1995 in Gällivare , she won the bronze medal with the relay. In addition, she achieved 24th place over 15 km freestyle and seventh place over 5 km classic. In November 1995 she got her first world cup points in Vuokatti with the 29th place over 5 km classic. In November 1996 she was second in the classic 5 km at the Continental Cup in Kittilä . At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Trondheim in 1997 , she finished 35th over 15 km freestyle. The following year she came in the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano on the 41st place over 15 km classic. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1999 in Ramsau am Dachstein , she achieved 32nd place over 15 km freestyle and 30th place over 30 km classic. In the 1999/2000 season she made it into the points 12 times in the World Cup. She achieved her first podium finish in the World Cup with third place in the sprint in Stockholm and at the end of the season she was 24th in the overall World Cup and 14th in the Sprint World Cup. In the following season she was also in the points 12 times in the World Cup. She achieved three top ten placements and at the end of the season 20th place in both the overall World Cup and the Sprint World Cup. At the season highlight of the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2001 in Lahti, she won the silver medal in the sprint. In addition, she achieved 32nd place over 15 km classic.
In the 2001/02 season Venäläinen ran three times in the top ten in the World Cup, including fourth place in the sprint in Asiago and in Oslo , placing 26th in the overall World Cup and 13th in the Sprint World Cup. Her best results at the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City were 16th place in the skiathlon and seventh place in the relay. After 33rd place in the sprint in Düsseldorf at the beginning of the 2002/03 season, she finished in the top ten three times in the further course of the season in sprint world cups and thus achieved 31st place in the overall world cup and 12th place in the sprint world cup. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 2003 in Val di Fiemme , she finished 27th in the skiathlon and 15th in the sprint. Her best result in the World Cup singles in the 2003/04 season, which she finished in 45th place in the overall World Cup and 24th in the Sprint World Cup, was ninth in the sprint in Stockholm . In February 2004 she was third in Umeå with the relay. In the 2004/05 season she achieved the 20th and in the 2005/06 season the 24th place in the Sprint World Cup. At the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin , she achieved 43rd place over 10 km classic, 29th place in the sprint and seventh place with the relay. After finishing third at the Scandinavian Cup in the sprint in Vuokatti at the beginning of the 2006/07 season, she achieved two second places and her only victory in the Continental Cup in the sprint in Falun . She completed her 135th and last individual World Cup race in March 2007 in Lahti , which she finished classically in 19th place over 10 km. After a three-year break, she has been taking part exclusively in the Finnish championships since 2010.
