history

The city was named after nearby Fort Kearny , a US Army outpost on the Oregon Trail in the mid-19th century. The fort itself was named after General Stephen W. Kearny . The additional "e" in the place name was added due to regular mistakes made by postal officials who usually addressed the city incorrectly. The city is located on the north bank of the Platte River and initially grew mainly due to the railway line.

Even in recent times, the city has seen steady growth of around 1,000 inhabitants per year. The largest employers are the Samaritan Hospital and the University. Other relevant employers include The Buckle Corporate Headquarters , Eaton Corporation , Baldwin Filters , Coleman Powermate, and West Company Pharmaceuticals .

Two miles east of the city is the Great Platte River Road Archway Monument. The old bridge that spans Interstate 80 is home to a pioneering museum. The city is home to the United States Hockey League team "Tri-City Storm" and formerly the "Nebraska Cranes", who were USBL champions in 2006 . Both teams play their games in the “FirsTier Events Center”, a large arena with 5,000 seats that was built for this purpose. The arena also attracted show business greats such as Bob Dylan , Christina Aguilera , Larry the Cable Guy , Jeff Foxworthy , Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus , and the Harlem Globetrotters .

Kearney is the location of the novel "The Echo Maker" (Eng. " The Echo of Memory ") from 2006 by Richard Powers . In addition to the neurobiology of the human brain, the central topic is the Platte River and the thousands upon thousands of cranes who take a break on their wanderings on the river every year.
