The Keilbach is a right tributary of the Ahr in South Tyrol , Italy . It rises in the Zillertal Alps southeast below the Keilbachspitze in the Ahrntal and flows through the Keilbachmoos and Keilbachtal. It flows into the Ahr at Steinhaus and continues to drain via Rienz , Eisack and Etsch into the Adriatic Sea .

According to the water protection guidelines of the South Tyrolean provincial administration, the Keilbach is considered to be particularly sensitive, i.e. H. ecologically valuable water where new hydroelectric discharges are not permitted.

The name of the brook comes from the Keilhöfen, which is located near the estuary at the entrance of the Keilbachtal in Steinhaus and is documented as "Oberkeyl zu Eurn" as early as 1461 ; the same applies to the alp of the same name in the interior of the valley with the Middle and Upper Wedge Hut.

In 1491, the course of the brook itself is explicitly named "water that ryenndt from the Keylpach" in a loan document from the noble Fuchs von Fuchsberg family , the officials of the Taufers nursing court at the time .

The term 'wedge' is interpreted as an old nickname for a wood chopper .
