Keith Campbell (biologist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Keith HS Campbell (born May 23, 1954 , † October 5, 2012 in Nottingham ) was a British cell biologist and embryologist who has taught at Nottingham University since 1999 . He was best known for his role in cloning Dolly the sheep .

education

Campbell grew up in Birmingham . After leaving school, he trained as a medical technician specializing in microbiology . He then obtained a bachelor's degree in microbiology from Queen Elizabeth College, University of London . After a stay in Yemen , he received his PhD from the University of Dundee in Scotland on a Marie Curie fellowship . The title of his dissertation was "Aspects of cell cycle control in yeast and Xenopus" (aspects of cell cycle control in yeast and clawed frogs ).

Scientific work

After two postdoctoral -Make Campbell began in 1991 at the Roslin Institute to investigate, where he along with Ian Wilmut experiments for the production of mammalian - embryo by nuclear transfer carried out. In 1995, two Welsh Mountain lambs (Megan and Morag) were created, which were the first mammals to be cloned from differentiated cells . In 1996, a mammal was cloned for the first time from cells of an adult, producing Dolly the sheep , which received worldwide media attention. In 2006, Ian Wilmut stated before a committee of inquiry that Campbell was responsible for most of this success. A little later, the Dolly sheep succeeded for the first time in creating a mammal cloned from a cell genetically modified in culture .

In 1997 Campbell moved to PPL Therapeutics , a company specializing in the production of therapeutics from the milk of transgenic animals, where he became head of the embryology department. In 1999 he accepted a position as professor of animal developmental biology at Nottingham University , where he has since been researching developmental biology and the biotechnological manipulation of embryos.

In 2008 he received the Shaw Prize (together with Wilmut and Shin'ya Yamanaka ) .
