Location of Kemmlitz in Saxony

Kemmlitz is a district of the small Saxon town of Mügeln in the northern Saxony district .

geography

The Platzdorf is located west of the city center on the eponymous Kemmlitzbach , a tributary of the Elbe tributary Döllnitz . The remaining lake of the kaolin open- cast mine is located directly southeast of the locality , further south is the Silbersee through which the Kemmlitz flows.

Surrounding localities are Ablaß and Querbitzsch in the west, Pommlitz in the northwest, Glossen in the north, Poppitz and Nebitzschen in the northeast, Paschkowitz in the east, Baderitz , Lichteneichen and Sornzig in the southeast and beyond the city limits the Leisniger districts Groß- and Kleinpelsen in the south as well as Börtewitz and Kroptewitz in the southwest.

Kemmlitz has had a station on the Nebitzschen – Kroptewitz narrow-gauge railway since 1903 . There was tourist traffic there only between 1945 and 1964, freight traffic was finally given up in 2001. Today the route is used exclusively for tourism, for which a new stop was built in 1995 in the town center.

history

The village was mentioned twice in January 1276. Margrave Heinrich the Illustrious confirmed the purchase of the village of Kemenicz to the provost Johannes of the Sornziger nunnery in a document issued in Grossenhain . In the second hour the abbess and the convent of the monastery confirmed that provost Johannes had bought the village of Keminicz with his money. Other documented names include Kemnicz (1341), Kempnitz (1347), Kempnicz (1466) and Kemlitz (1551). The place name of Slavic origin can probably be traced back to the Kemmlitzbach , whose name can be interpreted as Steinbach . Kemmlitz was dominated by agriculture for centuries. It belonged to the monastery office Sornzig , the monastery also exercised the manorial rule .

The landowner Riedel mined raw kaolin from July 1883 , this marked the beginning of Kemmlitz kaolin mining, which changed the appearance of Kemmlitz significantly. This is also reflected in the number of inhabitants, from 1871 to 1925 the population doubled from 104 to 209 inhabitants. The kaolin was initially transported to the Oschatz train station by horse and cart until the Nebitzschen – Kroptewitz narrow-gauge railway opened in 1903 . After the Second World War, the various mining companies were expropriated and in 1951 combined in the newly founded VEB Kemmlitzer Kaolinwerke . Civil engineering was discontinued in the mid-1970s. After the fall of the Wall , the Amberger Kaolinwerke Eduard Kick took over the Kemmlitzer Kaolinwerke.

Kemmlitz is the type locality of the mineral kemmlitzite identified in 1969 and named after the place where it was found .

On January 20, 1993 the communities of Glossen and Kemmlitz merged with Ablaß, this community in turn merged with Sornzig on January 1, 1994 to form Sornzig-Ablaß . On January 1st, 2011 Sornzig-Ablaß was incorporated into Mügeln.
