death

Although the Japanese government reportedly warned him against this on several occasions, Gotō traveled to Syria in October 2014 to seek the release of his compatriot Haruna Yukawa , whom he had already met in Syria in April 2014. In doing so, he himself was taken prisoner. In a first video from January 20, 2015, which the two Japanese showed together, IS demanded a ransom of USD 200 million and threatened the murder of the hostages. On January 24, a video was released with a still image of Goto holding a photo of the beheaded Yukawa. In an audio message on January 29, IS demanded an exchange of Gotō for the terrorist Sadschida al-Rishawi imprisoned in Jordan . The Jordanian government only wanted to respond to this request if the fighter pilot Muʿādh al-Kasāsba was released at the same time . On January 31, a video was published in which the beheading of Goto by Jihadi John could be seen. The actual act was not shown, but in the end the decapitated corpse was shown. It later became known that al-Kasāsba was said to have been dead by this time. A video of his execution was released on February 3, 2015.
