Identification vest
Identification vests (also functional vests or throws ) are used to unmistakably identify contacts or helpers with special functions at the point of use . They have the format of a standard, mostly retroreflective safety vest and are worn over the jacket. Colored jackets or shoulder bags are also used as alternatives.
Basics
The often common firmly affixed helmet markings or a rank / service badge only make a statement about the qualification or internal organizational position of the wearer, but not always about his actual function in the field. Variable helmet markings (e.g. elastic bands in different colors and sizes) are considered difficult to recognize. Therefore, the widely visible west have prevailed. The name of the function is often also given in plain text on the back and chest. In an expanded form, the identification vests are also available as functional vests , which, among other things, offer the wearer more options thanks to many pockets and radio device holders as guides.

Situation in Germany
The color scheme is regulated differently, there are deviations depending on the regional authority , organization ( fire brigade , aid organization , etc.) or area of application ( disaster control , paramedic service , etc.).

Situation in Switzerland
In Switzerland, too, executives who are currently performing a role appropriate to their qualifications are equipped with identification vests so that they are better recognized.
The only difference between the fire brigade and rescue service vests is that the latter have a red cross in a white circle on the back of the vest.
Other uses
- The Hamburg district offices use white vests with the inscription "Bezirksamt"; the Hamburg school crisis team of the Hamburg school authority blue vests with back label "Instruction fire brigade" for caretakers as well as yellow identification vests with the label "Schule - Einsatzleitung" for the school management.
- At some schools, identification vests are given to students who act as "mediators".
- The police use blue vests with the label “Police / Communicator” as a contact for accompanying persons. The Berlin police use commercially available safety vests in neon yellow-green for their anti-conflict team .
