The Holy Cross Mountains ( Polish Góry Świętokrzyskie , also Świętokrzyskie Mountains ) is one to nearly 612 m high mountain range in southeastern Poland .
geography
The mountain is located in the Świętokrzyskie (Świętokrzyskie). The voivodeship is located in the south-eastern part of central Poland on the Kielecka, Niecka Nidziańska and Przedborska plateaus. The southern and eastern borders of the voivodeship are the Vistula . The Pilica , Kamienna and Nida are among the most important rivers in this area .
There it lies between the Vistula in the south and the Pilica in the north, about halfway between Warsaw and Krakow and east of Kielce . It consists of different mountain ranges, of which Łysogóry is the highest. The Kamienna, a tributary of the Vistula, has its source in the mountains, some of which are designated as the Świętokrzyski National Park .
geology
The oldest rocks in Poland come to light in the Kielc Uplands. The mountains consist predominantly of marine deposits, which are present today as greywacke , sandstones , slate and quartzite . Numerous evidence of the rich life in the former seas have been preserved in these rocks in the form of fossil traces of plant and animal organisms, many of which have been scientifically described. The rocks were first folded during the Caledonian mountain formation around 450 million years ago. During the Variscan mountain formation around 360 million years ago, they were deformed a second time and unfolded into a mountain range. In the following years the mountain has been largely eroded and covered by young sediments, however, occurred in the Neogene by tectonic processes associated with the folding of the Carpathian again to uplift, so the old layers of rock were exposed again.
In the 2 million years of the Quaternary , the Kielc mountainous region was temporarily covered by a glacier .
