Kin-dsa-dsa! (OT: Russian Кин-дза-дза ! , transcribed Kin-dza-dza! ) Is a two-part feature film by Giorgi Danelia , which was produced by the Mosfilm film studio and was released in cinemas on December 1, 1986. The genre of the film is a sci-fi philosophical satire . In 1986 the film was 14th in the Soviet charts and had 15.7 million viewers. The film shaped modern Russian-speaking culture and is considered a cult film. Some fictional words from the film, such as Gravizapa , Pepelaz or Tschatl, as well as the many quotations, entered everyday language. In 2013 the animated film Ku! Kin-dsa-dsa as a remake.

The story takes place on the desert planet "Plük" in the galaxy "Kin-dza-dza". Two people from the Soviet Union who did not know each other accidentally come to this planet: Uncle Vova, a foreman from Moscow, and “The Violinist”, a Georgian student, after having made the acquaintance of an extraterrestrial teleportation device. The film is about her efforts to find her home.
The inhabitants of the planet Plük look human. Its technology looks primitive, but the impression is wrong - it is capable of interplanetary travel. Their culture is barbaric and satirically reminiscent of that of humanity. The Plükaners are telepaths , their own language usually consists of only two words: "Ku" and "Kü" (the second is a swear word). But using their telepathic abilities, they manage to master the language of foreigners within a short time. The society of the Plükaner is divided into two groups: that of the " Chatlanes " and that of the " Pazaks ". The Chatlanes are privileged, and the Pazaks must observe a plethora of rites to show them respect. The difference between the Pazaks and the Chatlanes cannot be explained and is only determined by a hand-held device, the “Wisator”.
The only group that is allowed to use weapons (" transklükators ") are the " Ecilopen ". The leader of the Plükaners is PG ; He is constantly worshiped by everyone, but in reality he is a harmless and stupid being. The fuel on Plük is called Luz and is made from water . The planet's water supplies were processed into Luz a long time ago, so drinking water is a treasure and can only be recovered from Luz.
Part of the plot is based on the fact that normal matches , the so-called KC , turn out to be extremely valuable on Plük.
The dystopian setting is often interpreted as an allegorical description of Soviet society. It is alleged that the high reputation of director Giorgi Danelia alone made it possible for this film to pass through the system of Soviet censorship.

Interesting facts
- During the filming, KU Chernenko became chairman of the CPSU of the USSR . Because the central word "Ku" formed the initials of the new head of state, there were fears that the film would be banned. The director and the screenwriter tried to synchronize the word "Ku" with another. While it was still being considered, Chernenko had died again (he only ruled from February 1984 to March 1985). Thus the problem became unnecessary by itself.
- According to the script, the violinist didn't have vinegar in his pocket , but chacha , a Georgian grape brandy. A scene of group drinking was filmed (in this scene all of the brake fluid in the Pepelaz was drunk). Because Mikhail Gorbachev was just coming to power in the Soviet Union and an anti-alcohol campaign was starting, you couldn't keep this scene in the film. It was cut out and Chacha was re-dubbed to vinegar.
- The swear word “Kü” sounds like the Portuguese word “Cu”, which roughly means “ass”. It is possible that this was why Kin-dza-dza! at the international film festival in Rio de Janeiro in 1987 received the special award for the “best design concept”.
Video
The film was shot on “DS” color film (35 mm, length: 3693.4 m). Although the high-quality Kodak film was received for the film , the director Georgi Danelija and the cameraman Pawel Lebeschew decided that the image should be hard and rough, without halftones and with high-contrast shadows. Because of this, the Kodak film was given to a different film group, and “Kin-dsa-dsa!” Was shot on the Soviet daylight film “DS”.
After extensive restoration, the film was released on DVD in Russia, but hardly exists outside of Russia. For a long time the film was not available anywhere with English subtitles. In 2005, RUSCICO (Russian Cinema Council) published a version with the Russian original language and English and French dubbing, as well as subtitles in English, German and many other languages.
