Liepe Church

The St. John's Church in Liepe in the Rankwitz community in the Vorpommern-Greifswald district is the oldest documented church on Usedom . The church building belonged to the Morgenitz parish in the Pasewalk provost in the Pomeranian Evangelical Church District of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Northern Germany . Until 2012 she belonged to the Greifswald parish of the Pomeranian Evangelical Church . The church is consecrated to John the Evangelist .

history

The church in Liepe was first mentioned in a document in 1216. Its construction is related to the donation of the Lieper Winkel to the Grobe monastery in 1188 . The existing building was erected in the 15th and 16th centuries. After the secularization of the monasteries in the Duchy of Pomerania , the church was under sovereign patronage .

At the end of the 18th century the interior of the church was redesigned. In 1792 the church roof collapsed on a Sunday after the service. A new roof structure was completed by 1797.

The Lieper parish has been part of the Morgenitz parish since 1989 . After the fall of the Wall , various repair work was carried out. In 1997 the organ was restored, in 2001/2002 the porch at the entrance was renewed.

building

The Gothic rectangular building made of field and brick has four bays without a separate choir and has a half-hip roof . There are wooden skylights in the upper area of ​​the west and east gables. On the west side there are segmental arches and a portal porch made of brick framework from the 19th century. Two pilasters support the classicistic triangular gable with the semicircular window. The double-winged entrance door between the pilasters is coffered .

In the windowless east side there is a segmental arch panel between two pointed arch panels. In each of the pointed arches there are four lancet-like screens that close at the top. Buttresses are placed over the corner at the eastern corners of the building . Further supports are arranged irregularly on the north and south walls. Pointed arch windows alternate with pointed arch panels. In the south wall there is a western pointed arch and an eastern round arched portal, both with a pointed round bar , the eastern one with a bevel and edge.

Furnishing

The interior has a flat ceiling boards and by wooden stand in three ships divided. There are numerous niches, mostly closed in segmental arches, in the walls. Paintings in the east wall depict the crucifixion , entombment and resurrection of Christ. In the east wall there is also a sacrament niche , which is closed with a wooden door.

The confessional was built in 1735. The church stalls and the pulpit altar , the only one on Usedom, date from 1772. A painting from the 18th century shows Jesus Christ on the cross. The organ from Barnim Grüneberg's workshop was built in the second half of the 19th century. The base of the baptismal font comes from the Middle Ages.

In a bell cage there are two new bronze bells from 2016 (on the occasion of the 800th anniversary of the mention). The previous bells from 1850 and 1955 are displayed on the side of the church. The belfry, built in 1860, was renewed in 1993.
