The Weitenhagen Church is a 13th century church building in the municipality of Weitenhagen .

history

A church in the parish was mentioned as early as 1280. The Romanesque brick building with Gothic elements dates from the 14th century. A wooden church tower was destroyed in the Thirty Years War and not rebuilt. Gustav E. B. Müller from Greifswald carried out restoration work in 1861/1862. In 1939 the paintings on the vaults from the Middle Ages were exposed again. The doors of the stalls are moved to the organ gallery . At the same time, the parish commissioned the manufacture of a chandelier that was based on Swedish models.

The church has been part of an overall ensemble around the House of Silence since 1968 , which was led by the parish priest , Wolfgang Breithaupt , in 2014 . In memory of Friedrich-Wilhelm Krummacher , the house offers retreats , meditation and pastoral care . The church was rebuilt for this purpose: the altar block was placed in the middle of the building in order to be able to celebrate the Lord's Supper in a large group. The design and execution of the altar , the baptismal font and the pulpit took Diana Obinja from Berlin .

In the years 2009 to 2011 the church was again extensively restored and renovated. Under the direction of Henry Held from Stralsund , the vault was restored and the color scheme from the Middle Ages exposed again. The Veil of Veronica was exposed and revised. The floor and the chairs were also redesigned.

architecture

The south sacristy was built before, the brick hall with polygon choir around 1400. The hall has a ribbed vault with a vault painting, which comes from the construction period. The church has two- and three-lane windows with pointed arches profiled with bricks and a double toothed frieze with panels on the sacristy gable . The triumphal arch is decorated with tendril paintings in its reveal. A sundial is carved into the south side of the church . Furthermore, a walled-up opening can be seen below a window.

Furnishing

The body of the crucifix was made around 1500, it shows remnants of the original painting and a crown of thorns made from real branches and is inspired by Tilman Riemenschneider . On the parapet of the organ gallery remains of the former stalls painted with Rococo ornaments can be seen, the grisaille painting dates from the 18th century. Two limestone grave slabs commemorate Regina Hedewig Catharina Hintze († 1785) and Christina Maria Schmidt († 1828).

Churchyard

The brick portal from the 15th century shows a basket arched passage and circular screens. In the churchyard there are three Brigitten crosses, which are supposed to remind of Birgitta of Sweden . Due to the missing tower, the bell is outside the church. It consists of three bells : the oldest was made in 1803 by J. G. Metzger from Stralsund, the two younger ones date from 1997. It is hung in the wooden belfry from the middle of the 19th century and renovated in 1988 in the churchyard.
