The Church Hall ( Swedish Halls kyrka ) is a inaugurated in the 13th century country church on the Swedish island of Gotland . It belongs to the parish (Swedish församling ) Forsa and to the pastorate Lärbro in the Diocese of Visby .

location

The church is located in the northwest corner of Gotland, 38 km northeast of Visby , 21 km north of Slite and 13 km north of Lärbro .

Church building

The brick church consists of a nave with a narrower, just closed choir in the east, a strong tower in the west and a sacristy on the north side. The nave and the choir were probably built in the second quarter of the 13th century. The tower was added a little later in the 13th century. The sacristy was built in 1899.

The church, with its white plastered walls is of gable roofs covered, slightly higher than the nave and lower above the choir. The tower has sound holes arranged in pairs, provided with columns and an octagonal tip. The choir is adorned with a Romanesque round arch portal in the south, while the nave portal, which was built together with the tower, has a more Gothic shape.

Inside, the nave is covered with four cross vaults, which are supported by a strong central column. As a result, with two naves and two yokes, it has the structure of a hall church in its smallest possible form. The choir and tower, on the other hand, each have a tent vault and the sacristy a barrel vault . A pointed arched opening connects the nave with the tower room, which is almost as wide as the nave. The triumphal arch of the choir is low and relatively narrow. The narrow arched windows in the east wall are still original. During a restoration in 1956 by architect Nils Arne Rosén, medieval frescoes from the 13th and 14th centuries were uncovered. A painting on the south wall of the choir, however, is dated to 1603.

Furnishing

  • The font is from the 13th century.
  • The altar is from the 17th century.
  • The pulpit is from 1619 and was painted in the 18th century, when larger parts of the bank furnishings were also painted.
  • The organ was built in 1992 by Johannes Künkels Orgelverkstad .
  • Epitaph in memory of Elisabeth Persdotter Lyth (approx. 1632–1652)

Surroundings

  • The church is surrounded by a wall with two preserved medieval entrance gates, whose connection with the wall suggests medieval origins.
