The Church of Hejnum ( Swedish Hejnum kyrka ) is a country church on the Swedish island of Gotland . It belongs to the parish (Swedish församling ) Väskinde in the diocese of Visby .

location

The church is located south of the Tingstädeträsk lake , 21 km northeast of Visby , 10.5 km southwest of Slite and 6 km south of Tingstäde .

Church building

The church was built of limestone in the 13th century. It consists of a nave with a narrower, just closed choir in the east, a church tower in the west and a sacristy on the north side of the choir. On the north side of the church there is a strong buttress in the western corner . The tower, which was built at the beginning of the 13th century, comes from an earlier smaller apse church from around 1200, the foundation walls of which were found during an excavation in 1914. The existing nave and choir were built in the middle of the 13th century. Parts of the arched frieze with reliefs from the old church were walled in in today's nave and choir , similar to the church in Bro . From the older church there is also the nave portal with a bird capital, albeit in a different condition. Above the west portal of the tower, a runic inscription names the stonemason Botvid. The church has white plastered facades and steep pitched roofs that are slightly higher above the nave than above the choir. The tower with sound openings divided by small columns is crowned by an octagonal spire. The main portal of the nave has an unusual position on the north side, as a result of the location of the church south of the country road. The lancet-shaped windows, with the group of three in the east wall, are all still original. The choir portal with the tympanum decorated with tendrils was probably built by Lafrans Botvidarson, similar to the church of Hellvi . The interior of the nave is covered by a tent vault. The triumphal arch is slightly ogival shape. In the choir and in the nave there are ornamental lime paintings from around 1250 as well as remains of paintings from the 15th century by the so-called Passion Master . The church was restored in 1960 based on a proposal by the architect Olle Karth.

Furnishing

  • There are two baptismal fonts in the church . The older is from the 13th century, while the younger, in the Baroque style, is dated to the 17th century.
  • A crucifix with a ring cross hangs in the triumphal arch and is dated around 1250.
  • The altar panel was created in 1738.
  • The pulpit was built in 1704.
  • The organ was built in 1968 by Grönvalls orgelbyggeri .
