location

The church is located on the western edge of the village of Stånga near the road 144 from Hemse to Ljugarn in the interior of Gotland, 41 km south of Visby, 25 km south of Roma , 8 km northeast of Hemse and 15 km southwest of Ljugarn.

Church building

The church is built of limestone and consists of a nave , a steeple in the west and a narrower apse in the east with a sacristy on the north side of the choir. The unusually richly shaped nave portal on the south side was created by Egypticus . It is one of the most remarkable ecclesiastical monuments on Gotland. A Romanesque nave with a church tower was replaced in the middle of the 14th century by today's nave and tower, the work of the anonymous master stonemason Egypticus . However, the lower part of the tower still comes from the earlier church. Romanesque foundation walls were encountered during the restoration by the architect Sven Brandell in 1929. The apse and sacristy from the 13th century could remain in place during the renovation in the 14th century, but were rebuilt from 1864 to 1865 true to the original model. The church has white plastered exterior walls with limestone window frames. The nave is through a steep pitched roof covered, as well as the lower choir . The apse has a cone-shaped roof and the sacristy has a monopitch roof . The high tower is crowned by an octagonal point and has pointed arches, pillared sound openings in three levels and pointed gables in all four directions. The apse has vaulted window openings, while the only light entry into the nave comes from a large ogival window with tracery in the south. The choir portal and the west portal of the tower are rounded. The nave portal from the mid-14th century clearly shows the handwriting of the workshop of Egypticus , as well as the reliefs walled in to the east of the portal, which were probably originally intended for another location. From the inside, the nave is covered with four cross vaults that rest on a central column. The tower arch and the further triumphal arch both have pointed arches. The tower room and the choir are each covered by a cross vault. A round vaulted tribune arch leads into the apse covered by a helmet vault. The walls and vaults are plastered white, except for the arches and the surrounds, where you can see the limestone directly. During the restoration by the architect Olle Karth , a smaller fragment of painting was removed from the tower room, which probably dates from the 15th century.

Furnishing

  • The baptismal font was carved by Hegwald in the 12th century . The figures on the baptismal bowl show the Annunciation , the birth of Christ, Herod's gift to Salome, the adoration of Jesus by the kings and a man who bends his knees.
  • The triumphal cross dates from around 1250 and was carved out of oak by the Hejnumsmeister .
  • The altar is from 1690 and has a medieval processional cross.
  • The pulpit is from 1723.
  • The organ was built in 1970 by Grönvalls orgelbyggeri from Lilla Edet . The organ facade is from an earlier organ installed by Åkerman & Lund Orgelbyggeri in 1871 .
