kkStB 18

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The steam locomotive series kkStB 18 was a fast train - Tender Locomotive series of Imperial Austrian State Railways (kkStB), originally from the Galician Carl Ludwig-Bahn (CLB) that Lviv Czernowitz-Jassy Railway (LCJE) and the Bohemian Western Railway came (BWB).

The locomotives of the series IIa and IIb of the Galizische Carl-Ludwig-Bahn (CLB) were built in the years 1859 to 1862 by the Wiener Neustädter Lokomotivfabrik and in the Lokomotivfabrik Sigl in Vienna-Währing. They were given the company numbers 9–15 (IIa), 16–27 (IIb) and 30–42 (IIa) and the names MEDYKA , MOSCISKA , GRÓDEK , SANOK , SAMBOR , BEŁŻ , RABA " , BRODY , WISNICZ" , DUKLA , SNIATYN , PRUT , BUG , SZKŁO , Stryj , KĘTY , BIALA " , DĘBICA" , JASŁO " , Babia Góra" , ROHACZ " , Radymno , Słotwina" , Lancut , KRASICZYN , Wisłok , PRZEWORSK , JAROSŁAW , Magora , Wiar , Olesko and Busk .

In 1868 another four locomotives were delivered by Sigl in Wiener Neustadt, which were given the series designation IIc , the numbers 5-8 and the names GAJE , SOKAL , ŻÓŁKIEW and ZBRUCZ . In contrast to the other locomotives of this type, they had a corrugated fire box, which they possibly received in the course of a new boiler around 1880.

The designation a, b or c in the series designation is used to differentiate between replacement boiler types. The table shows the dimensions of the IIc with a corrugated fire box.

The name boards on the locomotives were removed from 1873.

After the nationalization of the CLB in 1892, the locomotives were part of the kkStB, which they designated as 18.21–34 (ex IIa and IIb) and 18.41–44 (ex IIc).

The Lemberg-Czernowitz-Jassy-Eisenbahn (LCJE) also ordered five locomotives from the later kkStB class 18 from the StEG locomotive factory and from the Sigl locomotive factory in Vienna-Währing. The locomotives were assigned to categories IIIa and IIIb and built in 1866. The StEG locomotives were given the numbers 18-22 (IIIa) and the names PIORUN , GROM , STRZAŁA , WIATR and POSPIECH . The Sigl locomotives were given the numbers 23-27 (IIIa) and the names ISKRA , SWIT , CWAŁ , DZIEŃ and ZMROK . Another three machines of this series followed in 1870, this time supplied by Neilson & Co. in Glasgow . They were given the numbers 46–48 (IIIb) and the names ZORZA , CONIEC and RUCH .

The LCJE re-boiler the machines around 1880, whereby the steam pressure was increased to 8 atm and the grate area was enlarged to 1.48 m². The number of heating pipes was now 169, the heating surface of the fire box 7.3 m², the pipe heating surface 111.0 m², which increased the total heating surface to 118.2 m². The new boiler increased the curb weight of a machine to 33.2 t, the service weight to 37.6 t and the adhesive weight to 25.4 t. If the information was correct, cylinders with a diameter of 395 mm were also installed, which would have corresponded to a reduction in the cylinder volume.

After the nationalization of the railway company in 1889, the locomotives were part of the kkStB, which they referred to as 18.01-13. In 1890 the locomotives were converted in the kkStB workshops. Some machines received a replacement boiler from boiler series 13, recognizable by the steam dome, which is located immediately after the smoke chamber, and new cylinders with a diameter of 400 mm. Furthermore, the sandpit, which was originally attached to the circulation, was attached to the boiler behind the cathedral. In the course of the renovation work, the driver's cab was expanded and a vacuum brake was installed for the wagon train. The last locomotives of this series remained in the kkStB operating status until 1908.

In keeping with the zeitgeist of the time, the Bohemian West Railway (BWB) also procured a total of 13 express train locomotives with the 1B wheel arrangement between 1861 and 1864. Two were sold to the Altona-Kieler Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft in 1864 , one of which became No. 531 ALTONA at the Prussian State Railways . The other eleven machines were designated as series I, were given the operating numbers 1–3, 9–15 and 26 and the names PRAG , PILSEN , FURTH , CHRAST , ROCITZAN , ZBIROW , HOŘOWITZ , BERAUN , KARLSTEIN , ZDITZ and RADBUTZA " . The locomotives 1–3 were delivered by the Sigl locomotive factory in Vienna-Währing in 1861 (FabNr .: 24–26 / 61). Locomotives 13–15 also came from Vienna-Währing (FabNr .: 49, 29 and 30/62) , while the locomotive 26 was built in Wiener Neustadt in 1864 as a replacement for the machines delivered to Germany (FabNr .: 417/64). The remaining four machines were built in 1862 at Maffei in Munich (FabNr .: 434–437 / 62). The BWB refueled the machines around 1882–1885. The table shows the data for these newer boilers. The later 18.55–61 had a slightly shorter wheelbase (see table).

After the nationalization of the railway company in 1894, the locomotives were part of the kkStB and were assigned the numbers 18.51-61.
