Klamath Falls (also known as K Falls ) is a small town and the county seat of Klamath County in southern Oregon .
The place has 20,720 inhabitants (as of 2006) on an area of 48.5 square kilometers. The town was originally called Linkville (after the Link River where the waterfall meets) when George Nurse founded the town in 1867. The place has been called Klamath Falls since 1892. Klamath Falls was granted town charter in 1905. It has one of the highest unemployment rates in Oregon today, due to the collapse of the logging industry. The Oregon Citizens Alliance was founded here.
The Klamath indigenous people have lived here for several centuries. The name comes from Yulalona or Iwauna .
The main industries are the timber industry , potato cultivation and tourism . Klamath Falls offers numerous opportunities for summer and winter activities, including an ice skating arena Bill Collier Community Ice Arena .
Nearby is Upper Klamath Lake , the largest natural lake in the Pacific Northwest .
Demographics
According to the 2000 census , Klamath Falls had 19,462 people. 754 of them lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 7,916 households and 4,670 families. The population density was 421 inhabitants per square kilometer. 8722 residential units were recorded. The racial the population was composed of 85.12 percent white, 1.02 percent African American, 4.44 percent Native American, 1.32 percent Asian, 0.13 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 4.15 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 3.83 percent said ancestry from several races. 9.32 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 7,916 households, 30.0 percent had children or young people living with them. 42.2 percent were married couples living together, 11.7 percent were single mothers, and 41.0 percent were non-families. 32.4 percent were single households and 11.9 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size was 2.99 people.
The population was divided into 25.5 percent under 18 years of age, 13.1 percent from 18 to 24 years of age, 27.2 percent from 25 to 44 years of age, 21.5 percent from 45 to 64 years of age and 12.8 percent from 65 years of age or older. The mean age ( median ) was 33 years. For every 100 females there were 101.9 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 100.1 males.
The median income for a household (median) was 28 498 US $ , and the median income for a family $ 37,021. Males had a median income of $ 31,567 and women $ 22,313. The per capita income was $ 16,710. 16.2 percent of families and 21.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line, including 26.8 percent of residents under the age of 18 and 9.5 percent of residents aged 65 or older.
