Klaus Mättig (born July 13, 1949 in Dresden ) is a Saxon local politician and former Lord Mayor of the large district town of Freital in the Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains district .

Life

The trained machine fitter has lived in Pesterwitz near Dresden since 1950 . After completing basic military service , he worked as a test bench fitter and later in a PGH . In 1991 he became mayor of Pesterwitz. After the town was incorporated into Freital on January 1, 1999, Mättig joined the CDU and was head of the district until 2001 .

Mättig ran as his party's candidate for the mayoral election in 2001 and achieved 47.2% of the votes in the first ballot. In the required second ballot he then prevailed against his competitor Stephan Loge (SPD; 43.9%) with 53.7% . In his first term as mayor, among other things, the partial opening of the Freitaler bypass took place. In addition, Mättig had to cope with the flood in August 2002 and its consequences.

For the mayoral election in 2008 Mättig was put up for a second term. He won the vote in the first ballot on June 8th with 75.3% in front of two competitors. A year later, the “Windberg Arena” was closed due to construction defects and later demolished. Mättig had the former factory built up piece by piece as an event hall and partially renovated in previous years. Schools and kindergartens were also renovated under Mättig, including the school buildings in Pesterwitz, Potschappel, Zauckerode and Birkigt. There was criticism regarding Mättig's internal management style within the CDU city association and the city administration.

The 66-year-old Mättig exceeded the candidate age limit of 65 for the 2015 election and was therefore unable to stand for re-election. The CDU city association nominated the then head of the municipal housing company, Uwe Rumberg, as the designated successor . He won the election on June 7th in the first ballot with 51.3% of the vote, replacing Mättig as Lord Mayor of Freitals on August 1st, 2015. With his 14-year term in office, Klaus Mättig was the second longest mayor after Walter Daehn (18 years).

In November 2018, Mättig left the CDU.

Mättig is also a member of the district council, is married and has two children.
