Uwe Rumberg (born July 26, 1958 in Freital ) is a Saxon local politician and has been Lord Mayor of the major district town of Freital in the Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains district since August 1, 2015 .

Life

Rumberg was born in Freital and grew up in simple, middle-class circumstances with two siblings. In 1975 he graduated from the Polytechnic High School . From 1975 to 1979 he completed vocational training with a high school diploma at VEB Edelstahlwerk May 8, 1945 . In 1982 he obtained a diploma (FH) in power engineering and machine engineering at the “Rudolf Diesel” engineering school in Meißen . Finally, in 1986, he took over his father's craft business.

In the course of the Peaceful Revolution in the GDR , he became involved in politics and was elected to the Freital City Council in 1990, and from 1993 he was employed by the city of Freital. In 1999 he moved into the district council for the first time . Most recently Rumberg was managing director of the municipal housing company Freital mbH (WGF) from 2000 . He held this position parallel to the mayor's office until September 30, 2015, and was succeeded by Michael Heinzig.

On June 7, 2015, he was elected the new Lord Mayor of the city of Freital with 51.3% of the vote and succeeds his party friend Klaus Mättig .

Uwe Rumberg has been married since 1982 and has two children. He belongs to the Evangelical Lutheran Church.

In June 2020, he and eight other CDU politicians from Freital announced that he was leaving the CDU.

Political positions

While right - wing extremists helped organize marches against the conversion of a former hotel into a refugee home and calls for violence were made public, Rumberg, according to Tagesspiegel , doubted the refugees ' need for help and willingness to integrate . According to Rumberg, a stronger distinction must be made between “those who are really in need and so-called lucky knights who come to Germany to lead a carefree life without compensation at the expense of the community”. During the election campaign he had already called for “sanctions against rioting and violent asylum seekers” and for limits to the welcoming culture.

In August 2015, Rumberg announced in an interview with the Sächsische Zeitung that he wanted to persuade asylum advocates and opponents to hold talks so that “the conflicts don't take place on the street”.

On the occasion of the attacks on asylum seekers by the right-wing extremist terrorist group " Gruppe Freital ", Rumberg played down the acts. After the perpetrators were convicted, Rumberg welcomed the verdict and stated that "the problems we have in our country - also with regard to the refugee / asylum issue" could not be resolved by force. He continues to oppose the “general condemnation” of his city. Journalists from the Leipziger Internet Zeitung stated that Rumberg had not condemned racism and right-wing extremism as the causes of the violence, and Jungle World also pointed out that Rumberg did not address the victims in the statement.
