Gustav Klimpel

Gustav Reinhold Klimpel (* 8. August 1891 in Zittau ; † 11. June 1956 in Dusseldorf ) was a German local politician of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), which among other things Mayor of Freital until his death and ten years' Oberstadtdirektor of Duisburg was .

Life

Klimpel completed after high school to study law and later joined as a member of the SPD. As the successor to the sick Carl Wedderkopf , he became Lord Mayor of Freital in 1927 and held this office until he was dismissed in 1933 after the NSDAP came to power. His successor as Lord Mayor of Freital was Erhardt Schroeter in 1934 . He then worked as a sales representative before he was arrested after the assassination attempt on July 20, 1944 , because of his ties to the resistance movement that he had started in 1938 . In a subsequent trial, he was sentenced to four years in prison.

After his release after the end of the Second World War , Klimpel first became general manager of the Central Association of Small Animal Breeders based in Berlin-Charlottenburg in mid-July 1945 . Since he had been a practical allotment gardener for several decades and had held a leading position in the area of ​​settlement in the period before 1933, he was also appointed provisional chairman of the Berlin-Brandenburg provincial association of allotment gardeners and small settlers at the end of July 1945. On July 31, 1945 he became head of the main food office of Berlin and was a member of the magistrate formed by Arthur Werner , Lord Mayor of Greater Berlin , as the successor to Andreas Hermes as councilor for nutrition . He held this position until May 29, 1946 and was then replaced by Josef Orlopp .

Afterwards, on July 5, 1946, Klimpel became the first city ​​director of Duisburg . He remained in this office for ten years until his death in 1956 and was then replaced by Fritz Seydaack .

On July 9, 1946, he ran for the office of Lord Mayor of Pforzheim . While he took first place among three candidates in the first ballot with eleven votes, he was just defeated in the second ballot with eleven votes to Friedrich Adolf Katz ( CDU ), who was elected mayor with 13 votes and only eight votes in the first ballot could unite.

In 1948, Klimpel was a member of the local political committee on the executive board of the SPD. During his tenure on January 12, 1951, he became the founding chairman of the Europa-Union Duisburg.

Gustav-Klimpel-Strasse in Freital was named in his honor.
