Leena Khamis (born June 19, 1986 in Camden , New South Wales , Australia ) is an Australian national football player of Assyrian ethnicity who plays in attack and midfield. In December 2009 she won the Grand Final for the Australian Championship with Sydney FC . In 2008 she was used for the first time in the Australian national soccer team for women .
Career
societies
Born in a district of Sydney , Khamis first played for various clubs in the metropolitan area of Sydney and from 2008 in the newly founded W-League at Sydney FC . At the end of the league round, Sydney was fourth and reached the semi-finals against Queensland Roar in January 2009. Here they lost 4-5 on penalties , where Khamis was able to convert her penalty. In the following season, which ended in December 2009, Sydney reached the Grand Final and was able to return the favor: the team, now known as Brisbane Roar , was defeated 3-2. In 2011 Brisbane Roar was able to turn the tables and win the final against Sydney 2-1. She then moved to Denmark during the break in the Australian league and played for Fortuna Hjørring u. a. in the 2011/12 UEFA Women's Champions League against YB Women . She scored the first goal on September 28, 2011 in a 3-0 win in Bern . In the round of 16 against Kopparbergs / Göteborg FC she also scored a goal in the second leg at 2: 3, but since the first leg was also lost, the Danish champions were eliminated. Khamis then returned to Sydney again reached the semi-finals of the playoffs against long-term rivals Brisbane with Sydney. Sydney led 1-0 up to the 90th minute, then Brisbane managed to equalize and Sydney also lost Kyah Simon to a yellow-red card . Outnumbered, they survived the 30 minutes of extra time, but since the score was still 1: 1, the penalty shoot-out had to decide. Khamis did not have to compete, as two of their teammates, but only one player from Brisbane failed, so Sydney missed the Grand Final. Sydney then reached the Grand Final again in 2013, this time against Melbourne Victory and this time was able to win, although Khamis was not there due to a knee injury. A year later Melbourne was able to retaliate in the semifinals and Sydney with a 3-2 defeat despite a goal by Khamis the return to the final. And also in the following year in which Khamis did not play again due to a knee injury, it was the last stop in the semifinals, this time against Perth Glory .
For the 2018/19 season, she moved to local rivals Western Sydney Wanderers , with whom she only finished last in the table. Then it went to the capital club Canberra United .
National teams
In 2004 she took part with the U-19 team (Young Matildas) in the U-19 World Cup for women in 2004 , in which Australia reached the quarter-finals as one of the two best thirds in the group. She played in two group games and in the quarter-final defeat against the USA. Two years later, when the World Cup was held as the U-20 championship , it was taken into account again and was used twice. This time it was not enough for the quarter-finals, because after the increase in the field of participants no third group progressed.
On July 9, 2008, she was used against China for the first time in the senior team. In 2010 she took part in the 2010 Asian women's soccer championship and scored the first goal in the first game against Vietnam . Australia reached the final and became Asian champions for the first time with a win on penalties . Australia had already qualified for the World Cup in Germany , for which it was also nominated, by reaching the final . It was only used in the 3-2 win against Equatorial Guinea and scored the 1-0 in the eighth minute. After that, Australia failed to qualify for the 2012 Olympics.
At the AFC Asian Cup Women 2014 she took then part again. In the championship, in which Australia could not defend the title, it was only used in the second group game against Jordan .
For the Cyprus Cup 2015 and the test matches in early 2014, she was not taken into account due to the knee injury she suffered in June 2014, but was nominated for the 2015 Australian World Cup squad on May 12, 2015 . After the nomination, she was substituted on again in the 4-0 test match against Vietnam. At the World Cup, however, it was not used and has not been nominated again afterwards.
