The small whitefish ( Coregonus pidschian ), also known as kilch, is a species of fish from the salmon family , which belongs to the genus of whitefish, whitefish or vendace ( Coregonus ).

features

The little bark has an elongated and laterally flattened body with a lower mouth . It reaches an average body length of 20 to 35 centimeters with a maximum length of around 50 centimeters. The back color is blue-green to brownish, the flanks and the belly are silvery to white. On the first gill arch , 15 to 35 cage spines are formed in this species , which distinguishes it from other species of the genus. Especially in the Alps there are populations with very large eyes and deep forms are usually very light in color.

The lesser ground tendril occurs in a circumpolar manner in freshwater in Scandinavia (central and northern Sweden and Finland ), in Russia in northeastern Siberia , in the western catchment area of ​​the Bering Sea and partly in the Okhotsk Sea as well as in Alaska in the area of ​​the Beaufort Sea , the Chukchi Sea and the Bering Sea. In addition, individual populations live in Poland as well as in the Alps and pre-Alps , for example in the Boden , Chiem , Ammer and Thunersee .

Way of life

The fish are schooling fish in the bottom area of ​​cool rivers and lakes and prefer to feed on benthic zooplankton (invertebrate organisms such as insect larvae and small crustaceans ), small mussels and snails . They prefer sandy and scree soils. As with other salmon fish, there are both stationary and migratory forms within the species.

The reproductive and nesting place from September to January instead of in water temperatures of 4 ° C, the Rogner (females) from 8000 to 50,000 eggs drop to the floor. The fish reach sexual maturity at three to four years of age.

Danger

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the red deer is listed as "not endangered" (least concern).
