The small fort Ockstädter Wald is a Roman fort on the western Wetterau route (route 4) of the Upper German Limes , which was granted UNESCO World Heritage status in 2005 . Today's ground monument , of which terrain deformations can still be seen in the ground, is located southeast of Pfaffenwiesbach , a district of the municipality of Wehrheim in the Hessian Hochtaunuskreis . Perhaps it was a predecessor of the nearby Kapersburg Fort .

location

The small fort is located on the western slope of the Kuhkopf in the forest about 60 meters from the Limes pile ditch . It had an approximately square shape with sides of around 50 m by 58 m and an area of around 0.2 hectares. On the south-east side facing away from the Limes, the only access gate to the facility was in the middle. The fort was also counted as Wp 4/11.

Building history

The fort was probably built during the time of the Flavians (69–96). The garrison site was probably given up during the reign of Emperor Trajan (98–117) when the Kapersburg fort was built. A wooden watchtower (Wp 4/11) was then built north of the fort square, which was later replaced by a square stone tower (Wp 4/11) , presumably during the reign of Emperor Hadrian (117-138). The dating of a hexagonal wall foundation in the middle of the small fort, which could have belonged to one of the rarer hexagonal watchtowers on the Limes, is unclear.
