Monastery church in Guben

The monastery church is a Protestant church in the town of Guben in Brandenburg . The associated parish belongs to the Cottbus parish of the Evangelical Church Berlin-Brandenburg-Silesian Upper Lusatia .

History and architecture

At the end of the 12th century, probably by Emperor Barbarossa , a Benedictine monastery was built on the present site of the church . At the time of the Reformation in 1429, like the city, it was destroyed by the Hussites . According to a legend, a nun saved herself with a goat on the roof of the town and main church . The remains of the monastery were to 1562 through the salt office used - therefore, in ancient writings from Salt monastery reports. In the summer of 1604 the site was the scene of an execution: the dyer Jacob Wunschwitz was accused of inciting the citizens of Guben against the magistrate .

After the remains of the monastery were demolished in 1860, a new church was built according to plans by the Frankfurt architect Emil Flaminius , which was consecrated in 1862. The church was badly damaged in World War II and for many years it was partially secured only temporarily. It was not until 1990 that the roof was given a new cladding made of copper sheet . The last restoration took place in 2003.

The building in north-south orientation is a classic brick building with exposed masonry made of hand-made bricks. The tower has a height of around 51 meters. The tower clock comes from the church in Groß Lieskow and was installed in 1980 when the place was devastated . Near the altar, a monument dating from 1921 is dedicated to the fallen of the First World War .

Interior and organ

The interior is designed with a simple wooden structure. In 1952 an organ by the Potsdam master organ builder Schuke was installed as Opus 235. The instrument has 25 registers , which are divided into two manuals and pedal . The 33 glass windows come from the Berlin artist Helge Warme and in 1999 replaced the rather unadorned glass stones from the time after the Second World War. He was inspired by the evangelical song "Jesus, my joy", which was created in 1653 by Johann Frank (text) and Johann Crüger (melody) from Guben.

Ensemble of the Guben monastery church

The church musician position at the monastery church was established in 1952. Since then, church music events have been taking place in the monastery church. Since 1983 the musica sacra has been led by church music director Hansjürgen Vorrath . Around 15 to 20 different types of church music - sacral, secular, instrumental , choral up to oratorios - and musicals take place under his direction .

In addition, there are weekend breaks and rehearsal days in the life of the choirs . These serve u. a. in preparation for various projects for which the choirs of the monastery church receive support from alumni and friends of the Guben church music . A project orchestra is then put together for each of these projects . Depending on the project, these are members of the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Cottbus State Theater or the Zupf-Streich-Orchester of the municipal music school " Johann Crüger " as well as instrumentalists from near and far.

The work of the various choir groups includes, in addition to very different assignments, the roughly monthly singing in church services as well as the annual trips of the monastery church ensemble since 1970 with very different cross-generational casts.
