Emil Flaminius

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Emil Flaminius (* 1807 in Küstrin ; † October 7, 1893 in Berlin ; full name: Emil Karl Alexander Flaminius ) was a German architect and Prussian construction officer .

Life

Flaminius grew up in Küstrin during the coalition wars and the reconstruction after the withdrawal of the French in 1814. At the age of twenty he took part in the construction of the dikes on the Oder and Warthe in his home town . Flaminius went to Berlin in 1828 and studied architecture at the Berlin Building Academy . Here he came into contact with Karl Friedrich Schinkel , with whom he worked closely over the next few years. Flaminius implemented Schinkel's designs while still a student. At the age of 21, after the collapse of the south tower, he worked for Schinkel on the restoration of the St. Mary's Church in Frankfurt , one of the largest buildings in North German brick Gothic ; the destroyed south tower was not restored. Flaminius graduated from the Bauakademie in 1830.

Between 1832 and 1836 Flaminius was involved in the construction of the building for the Berlin Building Academy according to Schinkel's plans. In the discussion about the reconstruction of the building, which was demolished in 1962, Flaminius is again topical. The engineer Horst Draheim , on whose designs the model facade from 2001/2002 is based, raised the question:

“Emil Flaminius, Schinkel's master builder, etc. a. also dealt with the execution of the - blinded - facades. In order to avoid the negative effects of the construction work on the facade surfaces completed underneath, the facades were bricked from “top to bottom”. That means: The facade for the respective storey has been completed from top to bottom on each of the existing yokes at floor level.

When it comes to the pros and cons of the reconstruction, the purists advocate an original reconstruction based on plans from 1831 by Karl Friedrich Schinkel. Or after the building actually erected by Emil Flaminius until 1836? "

- Horst Draheim: A plea for reconstruction - all Schinkel - right? , 1996

In 1838 Flaminius became a city planner in Frankfurt (Oder) . In 1852 he took in Sigmaringen in Hohenzollern lands in present-day Baden-Wuerttemberg the office of the permanent way inspector, but went back in 1853 to Brandenburg , where he held the position of government and upper building advice in Frankfurt (Oder). In 1867 he moved to the Prussian Ministry of Trade, Industry and Public Works as a secret building officer. In 1872 he was promoted to the secret senior building officer. Flaminius retired in 1881, but retained influence on the state construction industry as deputy chairman of the Technical Examination Commission until 1887.

All of the existing buildings from the following list are listed .

The theater, built according to Schinkel's design, opened on November 1, 1842 with Lortzing's opera Zar und Zimmermann . It originally had 800, later 609 seats. In the spring of 1945 the building was destroyed by bombs.
  • 1842–1844: Town hall in Drossen
The new building was built in neo-Gothic style on the site of the older brick town hall from 1544, which had previously been demolished. The three-wing plastered brick building was restored in the 2000s.
  • 1852–1855 / 1857: Church of St. Peter and Paul in Neudamm . The three-aisled church was built on the model of St. Matthew's Church in Berlin, built in 1845 according to plans by August Stüler . The red brick building has an east tower and apse.
  • 1860–1862: Monastery church in Guben
In place of the neo-Gothic church there was previously a Benedictine monastery from the 12th century, which was abandoned in 1564. The gallery and the organ were installed around 1900. The Protestant church has been restored.
  • 1862–1864: Teachers' seminar in Drossen
In the neoclassical front facade of the three-wing, two-storey clinker building, Flaminius added horizontal brick strips in different colors to decorate the building. The step-like gables of the side wings and the central risalit in the main part were executed in neo-Gothic form elements. Its corners are surrounded by multi-sided medieval-looking towers. The teachers' college was converted into a preparatory institute in 1876 , into a secondary school in 1923 and into a pedagogical lyceum in 1945 . Today the building houses the School of Economics.
