Knightfall tells the story of the fall, persecution and execution at the stake of the Knights Templar , as staged by King Philip IV of France on October 13, 1307 , without any claim of historicity . The series focuses on the fictional Templar leader Landry du Lauzon, a brave warrior who is discouraged by the Templars' failures in the Holy Land.

Troester shared the dialogue book of the second season with director Marianne Groß and her husband Lutz Riedel , who also spoke with Jim Carter .
