Kodachrome is an American drama film directed by Mark Raso and based on the December 29, 2010 article "For Kodachrome Fans, Road Ends at Photo Lab in Kansas" by New York Times journalist Arthur Gregg (AG) Sulzberger.

action

Matt Ryder, a music expert, is about to lose his job with an independent record label. After a serious conversation with his boss, to whom he promises that he can steal the hip band “Spare 7” from a major label and sign it with him, an unknown woman named “Zoe” comes into his office. She tells him she is Ben's assistant and nurse. Ben (Benjamin), a photographer and Matt's father, with whom he has not spoken a word for more than 10 years, is seriously ill with cancer. Ben asks Matt through Zoe to make one final trip with him before he dies. Ben still has undeveloped color slide films ( Kodak Kodachrome , derived from the film's title), which can only be developed worldwide at " Dwayne's Photo " in Parsons, Kansas, as Kodak stopped production over a year ago.

Since Ben can no longer fly due to illness, it means a five-day drive from New York to Kansas. At first Matt refuses, because he still suffers from the fact that Ben was never a good father and he often cheated on his mother, but when Larry, Ben's manager, offers him a meeting with the "Spare 7", he agrees a. The two clash again and again during the journey, and the mood is accordingly depressed. A stop at Ben's younger brother Dean and his wife Sarah doesn't change that. The two had taken Matt in after his mother's death, as Ben was often away on business. Matt and Zoe have to share a room and Ben suspects a sexual relationship between the two, which he bluntly announces at the breakfast table the next morning. Again there is trouble between father and son. When Ben hinted that there had been a liaison between him and Sarah, he also turned Dean against him again and the three of them had to leave as soon as possible to prevent the situation from escalating further.

In the evening they reach Chicago and meet with the "Spare 7". At first it looks like Matt can't convince them to leave their label, but remembers Ben's tips to make the negotiation more aggressive and the band is no longer averse to a change. The band leader notices that Ben has unconsciously wet himself and the band members make fun of it. Matt is upset by so much infantility and turns the deal down. The three return to their hotel. Ben fires Zoe because she, rightly, criticizes Ben's behavior towards his son and now wants to move on with Matt alone. The two slowly get closer.

After two more days they reach Parsons. Photographers from all over the world camp and wait in front of “Dwayne's Photo” to have their last films developed until the following closing day. In the shop, however, Ben is not recognized and is rejected by the owner's daughter, as the order acceptance has been closed due to a lack of developer fluid. Dwayne comes in from behind and greets Ben. The two had made an appointment in advance, and Dwayne had reserved a seat for him. Ben hands Dwayne four rolls of undeveloped slide film. Little by little, many of those waiting recognize Ben as a well-known photographer and talk to him. Both return to their common room after the excitement. Ben starts cleaning his camera, falls asleep and dies while Matt is still talking to him. When his body is picked up, all the photographers form a line in front of the hotel exit and trigger their lightning bolts like gun salutes. Dwayne gives Matt the developed slides and he returns to New York.

Matt has tried several times to get in touch with Zoe because he fell in love with her on the trip, but her cell phone only passes it on to the voicemail. He drives into Ben's house, plays on his old drums and finally puts the slides into Ben's projector. They show an unknown and / or unconscious childhood with recordings of him, his mother, but also with happy moments with his father. Zoe walks in and they both watch the slide show. During the credits, photos of Ben's worldwide travels are shown and it is mentioned that they were taken on a Kodak 35 mm (Kodachrome 64).
