history

Before the Kohl Center was built, the UW-Madison basketball teams played in the Wisconsin Field House , which opened in 1930 , while the ice hockey team was based at the Dane County Coliseum . The construction of the new sports hall was supported by a donation of US $ 25 million from Wisconsin Senator Herb Kohl . Kohl, who studied at UW-Madison himself and obtained his bachelor's degree in 1956 and later headed Kohl’s retail company , made the largest single donation in the history of the university.

Construction of the arena began on September 7, 1996. January 17, 1998 saw the inauguration of the Kohl Center. Since no money was planned for a new video cube in the Kohl Center; the old system from the Wisconsin Field House was installed. Only in 2005 did the building receive a new video display board under the hall roof. At that time, a bar and restaurant in the rank and came LED - advertising boards all round added to the upper tier. In 2006 a second sports academy center was set up in the lower part of the hall. In 2008 the Kohl Center received a new basketball field.

With the construction project of the LaBahn Arena, the Kohl Center was renovated as a further part. This included, among other things, the redesign and enlargement of the changing rooms. All four cabins were equipped with lounges with large-screen TVs, a dining area and a video room. In addition, the medical area was renovated and expanded with rehabilitation pools and relaxation tubs. The total cost of the new build and renovation totaled $ 27.9 million.

In the foyer of the front entrance, a sculpture by glass artist Dale Chihuly attached. The work of art is called Mendota Wall .
