history

The Ischora river in Kolpino

In 1710, Prince Alexander Menshikov, with the approval of Tsar Peter I, began to rebuild a former Swedish sawmill southeast of the recently established new capital Saint Petersburg. The production of the plant was intended primarily for shipbuilding and was therefore of great strategic importance. Settlements formed around the plant, which were officially declared the new place Kolpino in 1722.

In the 19th century the sawmill and its infrastructure were greatly expanded; Kolpino's population was around 7,000 in 1880. In 1878 Kolpino received the status of a possad , i.e. a craft settlement , and three years later its own coat of arms. In 1912 Kolpino, now numbering over 20,000 inhabitants, was declared a city.

At the time of the Second World War , Kolpino was a front-line town from September 1941 to January 1944. Due to the local armaments industry, the city was the target of heavy air and artillery bombings, but without being attacked directly by the Wehrmacht . Several attempts by the Red Army to blow up the siege ring by attacking Kolpino in a south-easterly direction along the " October Railway " failed. It was not until January 1944 that the German units were forced to withdraw as a result of the Leningrad-Novgorod operation . To date, the city was largely destroyed and only had a fraction of its original population.

Economy and Transport

Industry is the most important basis of Kolpino's economy, it largely consists of steel processing companies, such as the Ischorski pipe works belonging to the Severstal Group, and mechanical engineering. On August 31, 2006, the German company Knauf opened a new plasterboard factory in Kolpino. The project created around 100 new jobs.

The city is connected to the M10 and A180 highways and has a train station on the Saint Petersburg – Moscow railway line .
