The Koning der Nederlanden was a passenger ship of the Dutch shipping company Stoomvaart Maatschappij Nederland , which was in service in the Indian Ocean from 1872 until its sinking in 1881 .

The 3,063-ton steamer Koning of the Netherlands was at the shipyard John Elder & Company in Glasgow district of Govan built and ran on 5 September 1872 yard number 150 from the stack . Shortly afterwards the ship was completed and went on its maiden voyage . The group consisting of iron -built ship's hull was 107.3 feet long, 12 feet wide and had a maximum draft of 6.5 meters. The two-cylinder compound steam engines acted on a single propeller and made 400 hp . The cruising speed was ten knots (18.5 km / h).
The Koning der Nederlanden carried passengers , freight and mail from Amsterdam to the Dutch East Indies . Her name meant "King of the Netherlands". She was built for the Dutch shipping company Stoomvaart Maatschappij Nederland (SMN), which was founded in 1870 and was known in English-speaking countries as the Netherlands Steamship Company . The ships of this shipping company maintained regular passenger and freight traffic from the Netherlands to the Dutch East Indies. The shipping company's chimneys were yellow-brown with a black border at the top.
On Tuesday, October 4, 1881, the Koning der Nederlanden was on its way from Batavia (now Jakarta ) to Amsterdam with passengers and cargo when the wave of the ship broke in the middle of the Indian Ocean . After the engine room filled with seawater, Captain Bruyns ordered the evacuation of the ship. All 216 passengers and crew safely left the ship, which sank the following day, October 5th. The nearest country, Diego Garcia Island , part of the Chagos Archipelago , was 400 nautical miles away. Three lifeboats were picked up by different ships, but three other boats with a total of 90 passengers and crew in them disappeared without a trace on the sea.
