The Koningin Wilhelmina was a Dutch double-ended ferry . The ferry was used by the Provinciale Stoombootdiensten in Zeeland in ferry traffic on the Scheldt and later by Texel's own Stoomboot Onderneming in ferry traffic to Texel .

history

The ship designed by D. Schouten Hzn was built under the hull number 716 at the J. & K. Smit shipyard in Krimpen aan de Lek . The launch took place in June 1927. The ship was delivered in April 1928 to the shipping company Provinciale Stoombootdiensten in Zeeland, which used it for ferry traffic between Vlissingen and Breskens or Kruiningen and Perkpolder. The ferry was the first of the Provinciale Stoombootdiensten in Zeeland, which could be loaded and unloaded via ramps from the front sides instead of the sides.

During the Second World War , the ship was repeatedly damaged, but remained in service on the ferry line across the Scheldt. In 1944 the Wehrmacht confiscated the ship and brought it to Hamburg . There it was rediscovered in May 1945 and returned to the Netherlands. After it was repaired and rebuilt at the Koninklijke Maatschappij De Schelde shipyard in Vlissingen, it was used again in ferry traffic across the Scheldt from 1947.

In the late 1950s and early 1960s, the Provinciale Stoombootdiensten put three new double-ended ferries into service in Zeeland (the ferries were known as “ press messengers ” because they were named after Dutch princesses). As a result, the Koningin Wilhelmina was no longer needed and in May 1960 it was sold to Texel's own Stoomboot Onderneming for 400,000  guilders . Texel's own Stoomboot Onderneming used the ship in ferry traffic to the island of Texel, initially between Den Helder and Oudeschild and from 1962 between Den Helder and the new ferry port 't Horntje .

The ship was decommissioned after the Texelstroom was commissioned in 1966 and sold for demolition in 1967 . Considerations to keep the ship as a floating disco or as a restaurant ship were not realized. In July 1967 it was handed over to the demolition yard. The hull of the ferry was retained and converted into a pontoon for cranes.

The ship was named after the then Queen of the Netherlands .

Technical data and equipment

The ferry was built by two of Smit MAN - diesel driven. The ferry reached a speed of almost 12  knots . Three generators with 40 kW output each, each driven by a four-stroke diesel engine, were available to generate electricity  . Another diesel engine was used to operate a compressor , which provided the compressed air for starting the main engines.

The ship had a continuous, 457 m² vehicle deck, which was covered by the superstructures . Part of the vehicle deck was open at the top at both ends of the ferry. It was separated at the ends by devices that could be opened upwards. These were replaced in 1954 by doors that could be opened at the side. This eliminated the height restriction of the visor, so that the ferry could also transport higher trucks.

Various lounges with seating were available for the passengers on the deck above the vehicle deck. There were further benches to the sides in open, but covered, areas of the deck. Stairs led from the passenger deck to the vehicle deck, via which passengers came on board the ferry or left it. When the ferry was rebuilt, the access for passengers was changed and separated from the vehicle deck.

The ship was also equipped with gates on one side through which it could be loaded and unloaded. These side gates were used by Texel's own Stoomboot Onderneming because there was no infrastructure for loading and unloading via ramps at the end of the ferry in Den Helder and on Texel.
