Life

Konrad Lessing was the son of the history painter Carl Friedrich Lessing (1808–1880) and Ida Heuser (1817–1880). Among his siblings were Bertha Lessing (1844–1914), the sculptor Otto Lessing (1846–1912) and the portrait and landscape painter Heinrich Lessing (1856–1930). He was a great-great-nephew of the poet Gotthold Ephraim Lessing .

Lessing received his first painting lessons from his father. Later he was a student of Hans Fredrik Gude , Wilhelm Riefstahl and Anton von Werner at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe and the University of the Arts in Berlin .

In 1873 he made his exhibition debut in Karlsruhe , after which Lessing traveled to the Rhineland , the Eifel , Bohemia , Franconian Switzerland and the Harz Mountains . From 1880 he lived in Berlin . In 1896 he received a small gold medal there at the International Art Exhibition .

Works (selection)

Lessing mainly painted landscapes, preferring motifs from the Harz and the Eifel. His early, often atmospheric, works were more strongly influenced by the romantic tradition; his later works increasingly correspond to the plein air painting, which his teacher Gude encouraged , in which an exaggeration of the landscape was unnecessary.
