John Konrads
John Konrads ( Latvian Jānis Konrāds ; born May 21, 1942 in Riga , Latvia ) is an Australian swimmer of Latvian origin.
In 1944 Konrad's family emigrated to Germany as post-war refugees, and then to Australia in 1949. Konrads learned to swim at the age of seven.
At the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome on February 23, 1960, he won the gold medal in the 1500 m freestyle with a time of 17: 19.6 minutes.
He ended his career as a competitive swimmer after the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo . After his active time he worked as a swimming instructor and founded a successful company. He also produced some instructional videos .
In 1971, he and his sister Ilsa Konrads were inducted into the international swimming pool 's hall of fame .
